Dalai Lama, is one of the Great Political Leader of Tibet as well as Religious teacher. He fight vigorously to make Tibet an independent and democratic state from China. Most of his followers and he himself are exiled in India.

Who Is Dalai Lama?

Dalai Lama was born on July 6th, 1935 (85 Year’s as of 2020) in Lhamo Thondup in Taktser, China. At the age of 15 he become Dalai Lama of Tibet and when he become in the Political power of Tibet at the same time People’s of Republic of China started invaded in the same year in India to Dharamshala in northern India where they established an alternative government along with there followers. Since than Dalai Lama conducted many events to conferences, lectures, and workshops worldwide. He also awarded as Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In December 2008, Dalai Lama announced his retirement after having Gallstone surgery.

Early Life

Dalai Lama aka Lhamo Thondup was born in Taktser, northeast of Tibet on July 6, 1935. He is the Spiritual leader of Tibetan Government based in Dharamshala. He is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan government. Since last 50 year’s he is trying to extablished Tibet as self Governing and democratic State and wanted to freedom from China. He was the fifth of 16th children and out of whom 7 died at young age. After having several search for many months religious officials him as the reincarnation of 13th Dalai Lama and renamed as Tenzin Gyatso and declared as 14th Dalai Lama.

People believed him as reincarnation of Avalokitesvara an Buddhist deity and the personification of compassion.

Dalai Lamas are those person who leave their life for humanity. “Dalai” means “Ocean” in Mongolian and “Lama” means “Guru” in Sanskrit or Spiritual teacher put together the title of Dalai Lama become “Ocean Teacher” means “teacher spiritually as deep as the Ocean”

Buddhist Teachings

Buddhism was inflorescence in the sixth century BC. After the Birth of Gautam Buddha “Siddhartha” and it is one of the oldest religions which is practicing today. The Origination of this Religions in India and then it spread throughout most of eastern and southern Asia. In Tibet it came in 8th Century, CE. Basically it follow four basic truths which is, (The Truth of Noble)

  • Dukkha : (Suffering, incapable of satisfying, painful)
  • Samudaya : (Origin, arising)
  • Nirodha : (Cessation, ending)
  • Magga : (Path, Noble Eightfold Path)

Who Become the Dalai Lama?

Tenzin started his education at the age of 5-6 and his Schooling was included Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine and Buddhist philosophy. It was divided into five categories which deals with perfection of wisdom, monastic discipline, metaphysics, logic and epistemology—the study of knowledge. At the age of 15 he got full political power as the Dalai Lama. However in the same year of October China invaded in Tibet and then Dalai Lama went to Beijing for Peace talk with all the big leaders of China like Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Chou Enlai. In 1959 Dalai Lama and his followers fled to Dharamshala in North India and established an alternative Government. At the time when he Invaded in India Chinese Government alleges that he is a separatist and act as a terrorist for inciting Tibetan rebellion. He took numerous of action after chinese invasion by hoping to established an autonomous Tibetan state within the China. In 1963, He released a draft constitution in hopes to established an autonomous Tibetan state within China and called it as Charter of Tibetans in Exile. In that draft It grants freedom of speech, belief, assembly and movement. It also provides a detailed guidelines for Tibetans. In September 1987, He proposed Five Point Peace Plan for Tibet, In June 15th 1988 he addressed European Parliament in Strasbourg, France where he proposed that plan and agreed to talks with the Chinese and Tibetans which leads Tibet a democratic State. He proposed a democratic Political entity for Tibet and that entity would be associated with China and Chinese Government would be responsible for all foreign policy and defense policy of Tibet but in 1991 that proposal declared invalid because of Chinese government negative attitude toward the proposal.

Humanitarian Work

Dalai Lama is the Spiritual leader and he spent his entire life for benefiting of humanity. He has also written many books and conducted many conferences, lectures and workshops at some of the major university of the world. He also met with many worlds leaders in United States, Europe, Russia, Latin America and many countries in Asia on a number of occasions. He is also a powerful public speaker and speech always about peace and compassion for people around the world. He also met many heads of religious around the world like Pope John Paul II; Dr. Robert Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury; Gordon B. Hinckley, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Patriarch Alexius II, of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Due to his humanitarian work in 1989, he was awarded Nobel Peace Prize. Nobel Peach Prize distribution Committee’s citation stated, “The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people.” after that there were alots of university and institutions have awarded him doctorate degrees.
